Billʻs Song
One day while visiting our friends Bill and Lani Petrie at Kāpapala Ranch I sang Jodyʻs song (Puka Mai ana). When I got done Lani turned to Bill and said something like "why donʻt you write a song for me". When we got back home. Jody and I worked together to write this song.
She loves music and songs that tug at the heart
That tell of true love and stars in the dark
Full moon and soft winds, red roses and things
That make her feel special like diamonds and rings
When she looks around she sees nothing but cows
Dogs barking goats crying as she makes her night rounds
She stops for the gate that drags on the ground
She pulls it and tugs it but if falls to the ground
Before she gets back in the seat of her truck
The engines gone dead and she cursing her luck
Cause her tire is flat and her flashlight don’t work
What else could go wrong could it get any worse.
In sheer desperation she feels for the jack
She knows it’ll be hours before she gets back
To the house to cook dinner get the kids off to bed
She’s thinking bout walking back home instead
Then out of the dark he comes hauling along
In a big cloud of dust , humming a song
Barely in tune can’t remember the words
His smile is like magic it lights up her world
Before she can see what he has all done
The tire is fixed and the truck engine runs
He might not write music he might not sing songs
But he’s there when she needs him righting what’s wrong
She still loves those songs that tug at the heart
That tell of true love and stars in the dark
Full moon and soft winds, but none of these things
Match than who she treasures
more than diamonds or rings.
